Nil was one of the many children Sombron fathered in an parallel Elyos. During his upbringing, he wondered why he was unable to transform despite being a Fell Dragon and always felt always weak compared to his sister, Nel.[1] Nil eventually befriended one of his half siblings, Rafal and the two became very close, seeing as his new friend also felt inferior and could not transform into a dragon.[2]

One day, Nel found her brother crying and Nil confessed his distraught over being a failure to her.[1] Wanting her brother to have more confidence in himself, Nel handed her dragonstone to him as a promise that the two of them would always fight together.[1] Later that same day,[3] however, Nil was severely injured on the battlefield and with Rafal nearby, Nil entrusted his sister's safety and care to him before passing away.[2]

Nel: There, there. You may someday.
    Nil: I'm a failure! I'm weak!
Nel: No, Nil. You are strong. Surely you'll be able to transform, eventually.
    Nil When?
Nel: Not even father can say for sure. But until then, hold onto this.
Nil Your dragonstone? But you won't be able to transform without it.
Nel I can if you carry it for me. And I know you will always be by my side. We are two halves of a whole, Nil. This power is ours to share.

Rafal: He died in battle a thousand years ago, shortly after Nel gave him her dragonstone He wanted nothing more than to make his sister proud.
    Alear: And...who are you?
Rafal:A Fell Dragon whose twin perished when I was too young to remember it I was a lone child with no abilities to distinguish me, surrounded by pairs of twins. Until I met Nil. My mirror image. The resemblance between us was uncanny, and we discovered we had much else in common. We were inseperable at the time. And I was all too happy to have something like a real brother. He was my other half.
    Nel ...
Rafal: That is how I felt, at least. But for him, there could be no replacement for Nel. When I found him on the battlefield, breathing his last, his only thoughts were of her. He gave me her dragonstone, and said that he wished Nel would have to never grieve. For that reason...he asked me to take his place.
