The Corrupted (Japanese: 異形兵 Grotesque soldier) are a type of undead monster created from human corpses. Created by the powers of the Fell Dragons, they became feared amongst Elyos. They primarily serve as an army for the Fell Dragon Sombron, and are occasionally employed by the army of Elusia, which worships Sombron.

Overview

Characteristics

All Corrupted share a set of characteristic physical traits: pale skin with glowing red cracks, black armor, a black external spine with glowing points, and a helmet with a single, glowing red eye that hides most of their face. Corrupted frequently exhale a black smoke, likely tied to the dark magic fuelling them, and evaporate into clouds of red mist, leaving no physical trace behind when slain. Though undead, Corrupted appear to have finite "lives" and can be killed in similar ways to humans without necessitating that the body be damaged beyond continued function or repair. The Corrupted primarily practice the same forms of combat as humans, though there also exist non-human Corrupted that parts of their own bodies to attack. These non-human Corrupted include wyrms, wolves, and wyverns.

Most Corrupted lack sentience, and are driven entirely by aggression or their masters' orders. They are largely incapable of speech, instead growling and snarling at their enemies. A rare few Corrupted, such as the Corrupted Morion, are capable of limited speech, largely restricted to short sentences. Certain more refined Corrupted, such as those produced by Veyle, are far closer in appearance and behavior to the Corrupted's original selves when they were first alive. They tend to briefly regain memories of their former lives when they die.

In gameplay

Similarly to the Risen in Fire Emblem Awakening, the Corrupted function mostly identically to usual generic human enemies. They almost universally possess the same classes, stats and weapons as their human counterparts, and are distinguished primarily with semi-unique battle models granting them their undead physical appearance. Unlike the Risen, however, all Corrupted receive bonus damage from effective weapons that target them.

In Engage, small bands of Corrupted fight alongside other human soldiers in Chapters 8, 9, 10, and 20. They comprise almost all of the enemy units in Chapters 1, 4, 11, 12, 13, 15, 19, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, and 26, and in the paralogue Budding Talent. Additionally, hordes of Corrupted appear on the world map to be fought in skirmishes. They will appear either as Gold Corrupted, which drop gold upon defeat, or as Silver Corrupted, which grant a large amount of experience upon defeat.
