Gáe Bolg (Japanese: ゲイボルグ Gae Bolg) is a regalia lance introduced in Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War. Also known as the Earth Lance, it was once wielded by Njörun of the Twelve Crusaders, bestowed upon her at the Miracle of Dahna after her blood pact with a dragon. Gáe Bolg is the property of Njörun's descendants, the royal family of Leonster, and can only be wielded by those in possession of major Njörun Holy Blood.
History
Before Quan and Ethlyn departed Leonster to assist Sigurd in his dealings with Verdane, Leonster's King Calf entrusted Gáe Bolg to Ethlyn in case the situation got too out of hand. One year into Sigurd's occupation of Agustria, with King Chagall's launch of an assault on Sigurd's position at Agusti Castle, Ethlyn gave the spear to Quan, noting that she had been reluctant to do so because of its unfortunate history, the Tragedy of Gáe Bolg. Quan used it in the fight against Chagall and the Orgahil pirates, and had it with him when he, Ethlyn, the infant Altena and the Leonster knights made their ill-fated journey through the Aed Desert. After Thracia's King Travant slew Quan and Ethlyn, he took Gáe Bolg and Altena for himself.
Over the following years, Travant raised Altena as his own daughter; her inheritance of Quan's major Njörun blood allows her to wield Gáe Bolg, and so she used it in the service of Thracia, defending the country from Seliph's liberation army and later allying with him upon meeting her true brother Leif and being encouraged by her foster brother Arion.
Tragedy of Gáe Bolg
The Tragedy of Gáe Bolg is a prominent event which led to the schism of the Thracian Peninsula. According to the legend, Njörun married a fellow knight following the foundation of Thracia, a friend of her brother Dáinn, and the three peacefully ruled the kingdom. This changed ten years later, when Njörun's husband and Dáinn entered a dispute over an unknown subject. The two turned to arms and Njörun attempted to break them up, but instead killed her husband with Gáe Bolg. This sparked Njörun's suicide, Dáinn's mysterious demise and the secession of the Munster District from Thracia following the tyranny of Dáinn's son and successor.[1]
In the following century, the Leonster royal family adopted a superstition dubbed the Curse of Gáe Bolg, claiming that the lance brings both love and sorrow to its wielder and that it and its twin Gungnir cry for each other;[2] for this reason, Ethlyn was initially hesitant to give it to Quan in Agustria, worried about the curse's potential repercussions on their lives.

Trivia
- Gáe Bolg's English name was leaked in the source code of the Awakening official website's page on SpotPass when it was updated on February 4, long before the lance itself was available in the game.[3]
