Revealed in a trailer on July 14th, 2014 alongside Lucina and Captain Falcon, Robin is a newcomer playable character in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, available from the beginning on the default roster for both versions. Both male and female variants are playable, and the player can choose which one they want to play as at will; both variants are completely identical in terms of gameplay.

Unlike all past Fire Emblem playable characters, Robin utilizes a variety of magic tomes to cast in their special moves and grabs. They also use swords for their physical attacks: they employ a powerful Levin Sword for their smash and aerial attacks, and use a simple Bronze Sword for all of their other attacks. Robin is governed by an emulation of the standard Fire Emblem durability system, where their tomes and Levin Sword can only be used a set amount of times before they break and must be left to recharge for several seconds before they can be used again. Although their projectile-heavy playstyle is versatile, Robin is held back in competitive environments by their slow speed and poor mobility, which combined with the high learning curve needed to master their tomes and durability system left them with poor standings on the tier list, where they finished in 31st place at the bottom of middle-tier.

Like all playable characters in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, Robin has an amiibo figurine. This amiibo can be scanned by Smash Bros. to add a trainable AI Robin into matches, which can be ported between copies of the game. Unlike Corrin, only male Robin has an amiibo figure.

Special moves

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U introduced customizable special moves, allowing players to customize their characters with variants on their usual special moves with somewhat different functionality.

  • Thunder (Japanese: サンダー Thunder): Robin's standard special move. A chargeable electric projectile which, by being charged for longer periods of time, becomes the stronger thunder spells Elthunder, Arcthunder and Thoron.
    • Thunder+ (Japanese: 強化サンダー Strengthened Thunder) takes longer to charge, requiring 5 seconds of charge time to launch Thoron, but is more powerful. Its durability is also altered: it only has 10 durability points, and the amount of durability consumed by each spell is also altered (1 for Thunder, 2.5 for Elthunder, 4.5 for Arcthunder, and 10 for Thoron).
    • Speed Thunder (Japanese: 速読サンダー Speed-Reading Thunder) both charges and travels faster, requiring only 2 seconds of charge time to launch Thoron, but deals less damage and knockback. Its durability parameters are unaltered.
  • Arcfire (Japanese: ギガファイアー Gigafire): Robin's side special move. Throws a bolt of fire a short distance ahead of Robin, which explodes on contact with a foe or the ground, dealing multiple small hits quickly before it disappears.
    • Arcfire+ (Japanese: エクスプロージョン Explosion) is slower to cast, but in exchange deals a single, large and powerful explosion.
    • Fire Wall (Japanese: ファイアーウォール Firewall) casts a tall pillar of flame which is useful for guarding against incoming attacks.
  • Elwind (Japanese: エルウインド Elwind): Robin's up special move. Robin fires blade-shaped blasts of Elwind downward beneath them, propelling themselves upward as the blasts damage anyone they hit.
    • Soaring Elwind (Japanese: 変則エルウインド Irregular Elwind) reduces the height Robin is carried with the first blast, but the second carries them significantly higher, greatly boosting their recovery.
    • Gliding Elwind (Japanese: スラントエルウインド Slant Elwind) casts the first blast at a 45 degree angle below Robin, greatly improving their horizontal recovery, then fires the second blast at the normal straight-up angle. Both blasts deal less damage.
  • Nosferatu (Japanese: リザイア Resire): Robin's down special move. Robin ensnares the foe and deals small amounts of damage in quick succession, healing Robin as it goes. More powerful if the foe is struck from behind.
    • Distant Nosferatu (Japanese: ロングレンジリザイア Long Range Resire) deals less damage and heals Robin less but has significantly improved range, ensnaring targets a great distance in front of Robin.
    • Goetia (Japanese: ゲーティア Goetia) foregoes the healing effect completely and is instead a more powerful attack. When it starts up it has a vacuum effect, which draws foes into its grasp.
  • Pair Up (Japanese: ダブル Double): Robin's Final Smash. Robin summons Chrom, and the two join forces to rapidly attack ensnared enemies, finishing with a powerful downward blow combining Chrom's sword strike with Robin's Bolganone.

Palutena's Guidance

Pit: There's something weird about this fighter, Lady Palutena.
Palutena: That's Robin—also known as the Avatar.
Pit: I wonder where Chrom is.
Palutena: Who knows? Probably taking a nap at home.
Chrom: I'm no idle layabout.
Pit: Whoa! Where did you come from?!
Chrom: Robin is a skilled strategist and master of both the Levin Sword and magic. Certainly more useful than a simple swordsman like myself.
Viridi: Plus, you and Ike are too similar. No point in having two characters that are pretty much carbon copies. Am I right?
Chrom: Excuse me?!
Palutena: What's more, you don't have an Aether recovery move like Ike does, do you?
Chrom: Quiet, you!
Palutena: Heh heh. Back to the topic at hand. Robin can use the Levin Sword and magic only so many times. Use this limit to your advantage, Pit.
Pit: Got it! This fight is in the bag!
Chrom: I wouldn't be so sure. For Robin's Final Smash, I plan on lending a hand. And then you'll taste the bitterness of defeat!
Viridi: We know you're trying to play the hero and all, but you can only join in if Robin gets the Smash Ball, right?
Chrom: You'll taste the bitterness of defeat! ...Right after Robin gets the Smash Ball.

The goal of this adventure doesn't change much because of your gender choice, but Robin's marriage options do. In Smash Bros., Robin brings powerful magic and swordplay to bear. He can exhaust his moves, but they'll be restored over time.

In Smash Bros., Robin brings powerful magic and swordplay to bear. He can exhaust his moves, but they'll be restored over time.
PAL: When Robin is found at the start of Fire Emblem: Awakening, he (or she!) discovers that, even without his memories, he is a master tactician. In this game, his attacks are powerful, but in true Fire Emblem style, how many times his magic can be used is limited. This also applies to the thunder magic his sword is imbued with.

SSB3DS Trophy Robin 02.pngSSBWU Trophy Robin 02.png NA: Robin's magic is powerful, but it has limited uses before needing to recharge. Thunder can be charged in stages, will become Thoron at max charge, and gains damage and speed with its charge. Arcfire creates a flame pillar, perfect for dealing with an edge-clinging foe.
PAL: Robin's magic is powerful, but in return, its uses are limited. You can charge Thunder in steps, and when it's fully charged, it turns into Thoron, increasing its speed and dealing more damage. Arcfire creates a flame pillar when it hits something. Use it on an opponent who's clinging to an edge to stop them getting back on the stage.

Robin returns as a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate with both male and female variants. They have been buffed during the transition from Smash 4 to Ultimate, with improvements towards their mobility, which was one of the slowest in the game in Smash 4, as well as increased power and usability for their specials. However, Robin also has some notable nerfs, with their best tools from Smash, including Arcthunder and their "checkmate" KO confirm, being nerfed or removed altogether. Robin's representation is below-average in the current metagame at a tier list ranking of 62nd, although players that main Robin have seen great success.

In the World of Light, Robin was vaporized alongside everyone else except Kirby. Robin is rescued after the player first defeats Galeem and encounters Dharkon, and is rescued in Dharkon's realm.

Special moves

  • Thunder (Japanese: サンダー Thunder): Robin's standard special move. A chargeable electric projectile which, by being charged for longer periods of time, becomes the stronger thunder spells Elthunder, Arcthunder and Thoron. Each projectile now takes a shorter amount of time to charge.
  • Arcfire (Japanese: ギガファイアー Gigafire): Robin's side special move. Throws a bolt of fire a short distance ahead of Robin, which explodes on contact with a foe or the ground, dealing multiple small hits quickly before it disappears.
  • Elwind (Japanese: エルウインド Elwind): Robin's up special move. Robin fires blade-shaped blasts of Elwind downward beneath them, propelling themselves upward as the blasts damage anyone they hit. Unlike Smash 4, using a depleted Elwind will not cause Robin to go into free-fall, and instead will give Robin a small boost.
  • Nosferatu (Japanese: リザイア Resire): Robin's down special move. Robin ensnares the foe and deals small amounts of damage in quick succession, healing Robin as it goes. More powerful if the foe is struck from behind. Robin can grab the ledge from a bigger distance if the move hits the opponent near the ledge.
  • Pair Up (Japanese: ダブル Double): Robin's Final Smash. Robin summons Chrom, and the two join forces to rapidly attack ensnared enemies, finishing with a powerful downward blow combining Chrom's sword strike with Robin's Bolganone.

Palutena's Guidance

Pit: This <guy/girl> with the heavy-lookin' coat is...
Palutena: Robin.
Pit: Oh, that's right. Chrom's friend!
Viridi: Really? Just Chrom's friend?
Pit: And his...tactical...person?
Viridi: Seriously? Tactician.
Palutena: Robin is a master tactician who can use both tomes and Levin Swords. But Robin's attacks have limits on how many times they can be used. When Robin discards the sword or a book, it's time to be aggressive.
Pit: Uh... You don't think a "master tactician" will see that coming?
Palutena: Probably, but losing the Levin Sword puts Robin at a major disadvantage, so do your best to capitalize.

There is no Codec Conversations about Robin as they are reused from Super Smash Bros. Brawl, which Robin did not appear in.

Spirit data

Robin's male fighter spirit can be obtained either by completing their route in classic mode or buying it in the vault. Their female spirit can only be obtained through buying it from the vault.
